Doing Business in China—Course Blog Kick-off

Sunday, April 30th, 2006

Hello, I’m Professor Walter Hutchens, the instructor for this Doing Business in China course offered through the University of Maryland’s Smith School of Business.

During the week of May 21-27 I will travel to Shanghai with about 20 US-based Smith MBA students for an intensive week of meetings. We will visit a number of organizations and get a first-hand appreciation of the dramatic changes occurring in China.

Today we had our first of two long pre-departure meetings. I got acquainted with the students and gave them an introductory lecture on Chinese culture. We’ll meet again next Sunday. I plan to lecture on Chinese history and provide some other context for the things we’ll see in Shanghai.

I’ve posted the course syllabus here.

An outline of the first class meeting is here.

This is the second year I’ve taught this course for Smith MBA students (some notes on last year’s class are here). I’ve been passionately interested in China for many years and am looking forward to learning with this group.
